Macular Hole

Macular Hole

What is a macular hole?

The macula is a small cluster of nerve cells in the center of your retina that helps to focus images on the inside of the back of your eye. A macular hole occurs when there is a small break in the group of nerves. It can cause significant vision issues, such as reduced central vision or blurred vision. The size of the macular hole and where it is located on your retina will determine the extent of the change in your visual perception.

Causes

The occurrence of a macular hole is most often an age-related condition and usually occurs in men and women who are 60 years of age or older. In other situations, a macular hole may occur as a direct result of a medical condition of the eye, result of eye trauma, or may develop post eye surgery.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a macular hole may appear gradually. They include:
  • An appearance of a dark spot in the middle of your field of vision
  • A decrease in your ability to distinguish fine details when you are looking directly at an object, regardless of its distance
  • A change in your vision that gives the impression that you are peering through wavy glass or a dense fog

Treatment

Left untreated, a macular hole can develop into more eye problems such as a retinal detachment. In mild cases of macular holes, eye drops or intraocular injections are used to reduce swelling and encouraging self closure of the hole. More often than not, vitrectomy surgery is the best and only treatment to repair a macular hole.
